Achieving New Levels of Performance & Profit with TLS (TOC + LSS)

The focus for this presentation is the application of TLS to the multiple facilities and the Supply Chain. TLS is the synergistic combination of Theory of Constraints with Lean Six Sigma.

You are only as good as your supply chain. Even if you are the best in the world at what you do, you can NOT succeed if you do not have the adequate inputs that you need to execute your process.

Fortunately, over the last 30 years management philosophies, methodologies, and tools have emerged that enable organizations to overcome their internal challenges as well as collaborate with their supply chains.

In Mike Asbury’s experience with applying Theory of Constraints and Lean Six Sigma to companies, he has found that by focusing Lean Six Sigma efforts at the constraint of a facility, it does not take long to move the constraint to outside of the facility and its span of control. This prevents carrying the early momentum of improvements forward until some of the external constraints (supply and/or demand) are addressed. For instance, a facility of company may undergo a series of rapid improvements that drives up throughput of orders by 20% and eliminates overtime. They may be able to handle another 20% increase in orders with just a few more improvements, but it may take a few months for some of the suppliers and some of the customers to adapt to the new level of flow that the organization can handle utilizing traditional methods of adding resources. However, by collaborating with suppliers and customers during the planning process. They too may be able to ramp up their flow of orders quickly by capitalizing on hidden capacity without the need of adding people and equipment by introducing and applying TLS methods.

Mike will discuss the basics of TLS and how the elements of TOC & LSS fit together very powerfully. Then he will describe a case of implementation of TLS to drive rapid improvements through an organization & its various sites as well as the interactions with suppliers and customers during a very large fleet project. This very high-profile project had to be completed across 3 different facilities within 12 weeks once production began, and production lines did not yet exist, nor were the employees yet hired when the contract was signed.
